Stephanie Hansen, Delaware's newest State Senator
On Saturday 2/25, Delaware Democrats scored a major victory by electing Stephanie Hansen to an open state Senate seat. With the chamber split evenly, Hansen's victory over Republican opponent John Marino ensured a Democratic majority in the chamber and held Delaware's status as one of six Democratic trifectas (single-party control of a state's senate, house, and governor's mansion; Republicans have 25).
Cheryl Turpin, candidate for Virginia HD-85
In December and January, we supported Cheryl Turpin's run in a special election for the Virginia's House of Delegates, District 85. A high school science teacher, Cheryl was inspired to run for office after the November 2016 elections. Her platform focused on human rights, environmental protections, and a fair economy.
Cheryl ran a fantastic campaign and was able to decrease the margin of loss from 13% to just 5.8%, or 362 votes, in her Republican-dominated district. We were proud to send hundreds of volunteers and phone bankers her way, as well as raise over 10% of her total funds.
Ryant Washington, candidate for Virginia SD-22
In December and January, we supported Ryant Washington, who ran for Virginia's State Senate in district 22. With the chamber split evenly, this race was an important one, and we were excited to support a worthy candidate and veteran law enforcement official in his community.
Ryant faced a steep challenge, running in a district that had traditionally voted Republican. In the end, he lost, but he was able to decrease the margin of loss by 50% compared to the previous Democrat who had run for the seat.
Virginia's State Senate is a flippable chamber, and we'll be closely tracking it leading up to November 2019.
