Did you know that states can change the outcomes of presidential & congressional races? That’s because state governments write the rules of national elections. Lately, Republicans have used that power to rig our voting maps (a practice called gerrymandering) & suppress Dems’ votes. It’s time to flip that script!
REPUBLICANS USED STATES TO GAME THE SYSTEM
The GOP pours money into state elections—and wins. In the midterms, over 700 state seats flip from blue to red, and 11 states flip to Republican control.
The GOP’s state strategy pays off. Republican-championed voter suppression makes it easier for Trump to win, and gerrymandering gives Republicans 16+ extra seats in Congress.
Dems flipped control of Congress, 7 Governors' mansions, and 7 state legislative chambers—and we successfully fought against the worst instances of voter suppression & gerrymandering.
BUT WE HAVE A PLAN TO FIGHT BACK
Dems have 2 years to change the game
Redistricting begins in 2021 and, in many states, will be led by the party in control of the legislature. This gives us less than two years to flip key states blue. Together with Swing Left, we’re analyzing electoral data to find the highest-impact state races in 2019 and 2020—and supporting dynamic Democratic candidates to win them.
How we'll make an impact
We focus on flipping—or shifting the balance in—chambers in states with a history of unfair elections and a demonstrated effect on national politics. In 2019, we’re targeting the Virginia General Assembly.
HERE’S WHAT WE’RE MARCHING TOWARDS TOGETHER
We’ll build upon the momentum of 2017 and 2018 by working to flip Virginia blue.
This is our best chance to reshape our democracy—by voting out Trump and by flipping states to ensure Democratic majorities.
States redraw their voting maps after the census. With Dems in control of more states, we can draw fair congressional maps—and undo the GOP’s unearned 16+ seat advantage in Congress.
More Dems running our states means fair elections. We’ll be able to elect leaders who speak for our actual interests—and we’ll finally see good policies turned into law!
